This is an extra-ordinary day as we celebrate yet another win against the Tobacco Industry. Mayor Bloomberg, you are well known and celebrated all over the World for your exceptional contribution to humanity. Today it is about saving lives and putting a liter of milk on the table and taking a child to hospital for the most vulnerable in our society. We cannot thank you enough.
In Uganda now, the Tobacco Control law says you cannot smoke or sell tobacco if you are below 21 years. There is a total ban on advertising, promotion and sponsorship. We have also said in the law that there will be no designated smoking areas. So we are moving to ban tobacco. I say “WE” because this is an award for my courageous team at Uganda National Health Consumers’ Organisation, it is also for our partners, the Ministry of Health, the Bloomberg and CTFK teams, tobacco control advocates, enforcement agencies, the media, the Parliament of Uganda and special support from Kampala City Council Authority. The tobacco-free world is indeed in sight – thanks to Bloomberg
It gives me immense pleasure to be here. Amidst the threat of the Tobacco Industry I could not imagine that I would be here. I do not want this moment to go away. We thank you all.
For God and My Country!
